Set it up in two settings
- Get a free API key at your dashboard.
- In Moodle, open Site administration > Plugins > Question types > CodeRunner.
- Set Jobe server to
https://api.onlinecompiler.io/api, includinghttps://. - Set Jobe API key to your API key and save. Then check an answer in any CodeRunner question.
CodeRunner keeps grading as it does today; only the address its runs go to changes. A first question, step by step, is on CodeRunner without a Jobe server.
What running a Jobe server involves
Jobe is open source and good software, written and maintained by the author of CodeRunner. Running it yourself means a Linux machine set aside for untrusted code, the compilers and interpreters your courses use, a firewall that lets only Moodle reach it, and updates for all of it.
The updates are not hypothetical. Jobe 2.2.3, released in September 2026, fixed a way to read files through a symlink and a way to hang a worker. Fixes like these are what an open project should ship; every site running its own server then has to apply them, and a server that falls behind stays exposed. With a hosted server that upkeep is ours. The securing a Jobe server page lists what to check if you keep your own.
Self-hosted Jobe and hosted, side by side
| Jobe you run | Hosted on OnlineCompiler.io | |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Install Jobe, a web server and the languages; open the firewall to Moodle | Two CodeRunner settings |
| Updates and security fixes | You apply them, for Jobe and for every compiler | We apply them; see the security page |
| Languages | What you install and maintain | 46 languages; Scala, Haskell, SQL, Swift and more included |
| numpy and matplotlib | Install them and tune memory limits (the usual errors) | Installed in the Python question type |
| A whole class pressing Check | Limited by the machine you sized | Per-plan limits; book an exam ahead for the class size you expect |
| Cost | The server and your time | Free for 100,000 runs a month, then paid plans |
| Differences from Jobe | None | Compiler flags ignored, no command-line arguments, fixed memory, no multilanguage type (full list) |
| Where code runs | Your machine | Servers in the European Union |

Practice runs are free
The free plan includes 100,000 runs a month with no credit card. Every run CodeRunner sends counts as one, and a Check can be one run or one run per test case depending on the question's template. That covers a lot of coursework and the time you spend writing questions. The free question packs give you questions to start from.
Booked exams
For an exam that counts, book it ahead. During the booked hours your exam's runs are not refused by your account's limits and a run that finds the service busy waits briefly instead of failing at once. Plans run from $300 a year (4 exams of up to 100 students) to $1,500 (40 exams of up to 300), with 1 free trial exam per account. During a booked exam, write to exams@onlinecompiler.io at any hour; we watch it throughout your exam.
For your IT office
Institutions usually ask for these: the security page on isolation and patching, the service level agreement, the data processing agreement and the sub-processor list. The contracting party is RunCode Inc. (USA).

Frequently asked questions
Is there a hosted Jobe server for CodeRunner?
Yes. Set CodeRunner's Jobe server to https://api.onlinecompiler.io/api and its Jobe API key to an OnlineCompiler.io API key. There is nothing to install or patch on your side, and the free plan includes 100,000 runs a month.
Is students’ code isolated?
Every run gets a fresh gVisor sandbox with no network access, 512 MB of memory and a 30-second limit, and is thrown away afterwards. The security page has the details, including how we patch.
Do numpy and matplotlib work?
Yes, in the Python question type the data-science packages are installed, so imports that fail on many self-hosted Jobe servers work here. Memory is fixed per run, so teaching-sized work fits and models that need gigabytes do not.
Do CodeRunner SQL questions work?
Yes. The built-in sql question type runs a Python template that calls the sqlite3 program, and the hosted server has it. Each question needs exactly one .db file attached as a support file.
Can it handle a whole class during an exam?
For an exam that counts, book it ahead. During the booked hours your exam's runs, up to the number of students you booked, are not refused by your account's limits, and a run that finds the service busy waits briefly instead of failing at once. Exam plans start at $300 a year. During a booked exam, write to exams@onlinecompiler.io at any hour; we watch it throughout your exam.
Where does my students’ code run?
On servers in the European Union. The privacy page says what is stored and for how long, and the data processing agreement and sub-processor list are published for institutions that need them.
What is different from a Jobe server I run myself?
Compiler flags set in a question are ignored, command-line arguments are refused, memory and process limits are fixed rather than set per question, and the built-in multilanguage question type does not work. The Jobe-compatible API page lists every difference.
