CodeRunner exams

Moodle coding exams on CodeRunner, booked ahead

A CodeRunner quiz is easy to run on a normal day. An exam is the one day a refused run costs a student marks. Book your exam with us, and during its hours your runs, up to the number of students you booked, are not refused by your account's limits, we watch the exams inbox, and you get a report afterwards.

What a booked exam gives you

You tell us when the exam is, which Moodle site runs it and how many students sit it. Then, from 15 minutes before the start until 15 minutes after the end:

  • Your exam's runs are not refused by your account's limits, up to the number of students you booked.
  • A run that finds the service busy waits briefly instead of failing at once.
  • Running past your monthly allowance does not stop the exam.
  • We are alerted automatically if a run of your exam is refused or fails on our side, and we watch the exams inbox throughout.

Nothing else about your runs changes: the same languages, the same time limit per run and the same answers to CodeRunner. Everything outside a booking works as it does today.

How to book

  1. Open Exams in your dashboard. Your Moodle site is one of your API keys: the one you entered in CodeRunner as the Jobe API key (setup).
  2. Choose Book an exam and fill in the title (for example "CS101 midterm, section B"), the site, the date, start and end in your time zone, the number of students and the languages.
  3. Add a contact for the day: the name and email of the lecturer running the exam, and a phone if you like.
  4. A booking on a paid plan is confirmed at once, by email to you and to us. A free trial booking waits for our approval and shows as pending until then.

A booking starts at least 24 hours ahead and lasts up to 6 hours. You can edit or cancel it until it starts. Cancel more than 24 hours before the start and the exam goes back to your yearly total.

Test your site before the day

Every upcoming booking has a Test my site button. It runs one tiny program in each booked language, the same way CodeRunner would, on your Moodle site's key, and tells you for each language whether it ran correctly and how long it took. It also shows the last time your Moodle site sent us a run. If the site has never called us, the page shows the exact CodeRunner settings to enter.

These test runs do not count against your monthly allowance. We also run the same check 24 hours before the exam and email you the result, so a wrong setting shows up the day before, not in the exam.

The report afterwards

Within an hour of the end, you get a report by email, and the booking page shows it:

  • how many runs your exam made, its busiest minute, and the median and slowest run time;
  • the outcomes: finished normally, ended with an error, stopped at the time limit;
  • the languages used;
  • anything we refused or failed on our side (we expect none), and a note that support was available.

The report counts your Moodle site's runs during the booking. It never names students, because we do not know them.

Support during your exam

During a booked exam, write to exams@onlinecompiler.io at any hour; we watch it throughout your exam. We are also alerted automatically if a run of your exam is refused or fails on our side.

Prices

Exam plans are yearly and cover one Moodle site. An account with several sites can hold a plan for each.

PlanPrice a yearBooked exams a yearStudents per exam
Exam Basic$3004100
Exam Standard$60012150
Department$1,50040300
Free trial$01 per account, approved by us first100

More than Department: contact us for a quote. We invoice the yearly plans, and once the invoice is paid your plan shows in your dashboard. Practice stays on the Free plan, with 100,000 runs a month and no booking.

Not sure you need it? Most courses run fine on the free plan day to day. CodeRunner without a Jobe server has the setup, and the Jobe-compatible API docs have the booking summary.

Frequently asked questions

What is a booked CodeRunner exam?

A booking tells us when your class sits a CodeRunner quiz. From 15 minutes before it starts until 15 minutes after it ends, your exam's runs (up to the number of students you booked) are not refused by your account's limits, and a run that finds the service busy waits briefly instead of failing at once. We watch the exams inbox throughout.

How far ahead do I book?

At least 24 hours ahead, for up to 6 hours at a time. For a sooner exam, write to exams@onlinecompiler.io. Cancel more than 24 hours before the start and the exam goes back to your yearly total.

What if something goes wrong during the exam?

Write to exams@onlinecompiler.io at any hour; we watch it throughout your exam. We are also alerted automatically if a run of your exam is refused or fails on our side. We give no response time and no phone number.

Can I try it for free?

Yes: one free exam per account, with the same limits as Exam Basic. We approve it first, so book it a few days ahead; the booking shows as pending until we do.

Do I need a booking for practice quizzes?

No. Practice stays on the Free plan: 100,000 runs a month and the same Jobe-compatible API, with no booking. Book only the exams that count, where a refused run would cost a student marks.

Does each student need an account?

No. Students never touch OnlineCompiler.io. Your Moodle site's CodeRunner sends their runs with your API key, so the exam is booked on that key.

My site needs more than the Department plan.

More than 40 exams a year or 300 students in one exam: write to exams@onlinecompiler.io or use the contact form, and we will quote it.
